Like the heroes of Hemingway and Melville, millions of men and boys around the world go fishing. Through patience, persistence, ingenuity, and the right gear, they draw from the dark waters the slick, muscular, thrashing bodies of large fish.
Moments of triumph are documented in photos taken from a pier or a boat: the body half-submerged, an arm raised or embracing the catch, the hunted fish displayed. Faces smile with pride.
Roni Fixler collects hundreds of such images, many sourced from Tinder profile photos. They become the basis for a diverse painterly investigation of masculinity—its physicality, gestures, and its overt and repressed desires. These works, painted in 2025, combine contemporary color with drawing that echoes fantasy and travel-book illustrations from earlier centuries. They are grotesque on one hand, yet rich in beauty, depth, and humor on the other. Each condenses a wide painterly expression into a small format that echoes a mobile phone screen. These are paintings that demand close looking—entry into a world, a hunting journey, or a fishing holiday.
